How much does a custom portrait cost? Market prices in 2026

This is the first question everyone asks, and the honest answer is: it depends on only three things. Everything else is just marketing. Here's how to understand French market prices without getting ripped off.

The three price ranges

The digital file, from €10 to €25. You receive a high-definition image by email, with no package. This is the logical entry-level option: there's no printing, no frame, no shipping. It's also the best way to test a service provider before committing further.

The poster print only, from €20 to €40. The print without a frame. Beware of the trap: a poster that needs framing will cost you an extra €20 to €50 for the frame, and you'll have to do it yourself.

The framed portrait, from €50 to €130. The finished product, ready to hang. This is where the price differences become significant, and where you need to look at what's behind the price.

What really makes the price vary

The size. This is the number one factor. A 21 × 30 cm and a 50 × 70 cm do not have the same printing cost, frame cost, or shipping cost — a large format travels in reinforced packaging.

The number of subjects. A single animal requires less work than a family of five. Serious providers display a clear surcharge. Those who don't mention it will charge you the difference after the fact, or deliver a sloppy result.

The place of manufacture. A portrait printed outside the European Union arrives cheaper — then you discover extended delivery times and, depending on the value, customs fees to pay upon delivery. Always check where the package is coming from.

The trap of permanent crossed-out prices

You'll see many shops display "€89 crossed out, €49 today" — all year round. In France, a crossed-out reference price must correspond to a price actually practiced before the promotion. A permanent discount is not a discount: it's the price, with a staged presentation. It's not accidentally illegal, it's illegal because it distorts your judgment.

The three signals that justify a higher price

1. Preview before printing. If you see the result before anything goes into production, you're no longer buying a gamble, you're buying an item you've already approved. This changes everything for a personalized product.

2. Retouching included. A botched portrait can be corrected beforehand. A provider who refuses any retouching puts all the risk on you.

3. A real contact person. An email address that gets answered, clear terms and conditions, a clear return policy. For a personalized product, where the right of withdrawal does not apply in the same way as a standard product, this is your real protection.

So, what is the right price?

The one that covers manufacturing in Europe, a validated preview, and retouching, without selling you an imaginary discount. Below €40 for a framed product, something is necessarily sacrificed: the quality of the paper, that of the frame, the manufacturing distance, or the service when things go wrong.
